Abstract

National Statistical Offices (NSOs) have long relied on traditional data sources, including censuses, surveys, and administrative data, to produce official statistics that inform policy decisions. However, the rapid pace of technological advancements has led to an explosion in data volume, variety, and velocity, necessitating innovative approaches to enhance the capabilities of NSOs. The Nigerian National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) is committed to modernizing its statistical production, management, and dissemination by embracing cutting-edge technologies and methodologies. Transitioning from paper-based methods to Computer-Assisted Interviewing techniques and exploring emerging technologies like Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), NBS has made significant strides in adopting new technologies. This evolution has enabled the Bureau to reach a broader audience and increase the usage of its products. Nevertheless, despite its willingness to innovate, NBS faces challenges, including resistance to change, concerns about job displacement, insufficient funding, and limited technological expertise, among others. This paper chronicles NBS’s journey, from its inception as the Office of Statistics to its merger with the National Data Bank, highlighting its progress in embracing innovative approaches to official statistics production and the challenges it faces. By sharing the NBS's experiences, this paper aims to contribute to the global conversation on innovation in modernizing statistical systems and enhancing the relevance of official statistics in Nigeria's digital era.
