ISI Regional Statistics Conference

The 5th ISI Regional Statistics Conference took place from 3 to 5 June 2026 in Valletta (Malta), marking the first time the event was held in Europe. It provided an excellent opportunity for statisticians and data scientists to meet, exchange ideas, and engage in three days of discussions and networking in the unique setting of Malta in the heart of the Mediterranean.

The Regional Statistics Conference featured invited sessions and contributed papers, and was preceded on 2 June by a series of short courses.

ISI and its Associations organised the programme in collaboration with local and predominantly European partners, bringing together scientists and practitioners working across all areas of statistics and data science—from traditional methodologies to their intersections with artificial intelligence. Contributions reflected ISI priorities, including the ethical and sound use of methods, the advancement of knowledge, and meaningful social impact.

Participants also had the opportunity to experience the hospitality of the Maltese people and appreciate the country’s natural and cultural heritage, including masterpieces such as Caravaggio’s paintings, set within an environment rich in history and shaped by a blend of cultures.

Keynote Speaker - Etienne Caruana

The Evolving Role of National Statistics Institutes

How can National Statistics Institutes stay trusted and relevant in a fast-changing data landscape? In his keynote session, Etienne Caruana will explore how NSIs can modernise through flexible product development, innovative data sources, AI-driven methods and stronger collaboration across the National Statistical System. He outlines a forward-looking vision in which NSIs act not only as producers of official statistics, but as system-wide data stewards who enable innovation, research and the effective use and reuse of data.
