Abstract

Equity capital from a foreign investor flowing into another country to build factories, outlets, or R&D facilities, creating substantial benefits for the host economy. This is a common interpretation of what Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) entails. While this interpretation remains accurate in some instances, restructuring activities of large multinational enterprises (MNEs) and changing financing patterns increasingly result in FDI cases that data users may not anticipate.
