A survey reflects the paradigm shift in electrification and power development satisfaction in Bangladesh.

Abstract
Year 2017, People of Bangladesh were facing many problems due to electricity
shortage. The overall objective of this survey was to gather opinions on electricity supply, multiple
electricity consumption levels, satisfaction with electricity provision, perceptions of quality and
electricity-saving strategies in Bangladesh. A structured questionnaire was used in the survey.
Thirty thousand (sample) Bangladeshis participated in the survey. Data were collected through
CATI (Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviewing) for the first time in Bangladesh.
About eighty two (82%) percent of households indicated that they were electrified. The use of
solar panel, hardly features for electrified households alike, being reported in fewer than ten (7.6%)
percent cases. Just over a tenth (11.0%) households were reported as non-electrified. More than
half of the Bangladeshi (64.7%) households were electrified by REB (Rural Electrification Board)
supply. The majority (86.9%) of Bangladeshi were satisfied with the improvement of electricity
service compared to the previous 6 years, while the rest were dissatisfied (13.1%). People living
in city-corporation areas were the most satisfied, rural areas were the least satisfied. In terms of
confidence regarding government future plans, more than three-quarters (79.7%) of
Bangladeshi adults are satisfied. Very few (5.6%) said that they had 'No' confidence and (14.7%)
were uncertain about their opinions. Power-saving measures as follows: (i) Using Electricity saving
bulbs/Fan/AC/Refrigerator (77.5%), (ii) Switching off appliance not in use (69.6%), (iii) Advice others
to reduce consumption (38.2%), (iv) No measures had taken (15.7%). It is concluded that the
development of Power Supply has changed the citizen’s lives in Bangladesh irrespective of their
occupation.
