Abstract

The general status of natural resources has been significantly enhanced in the recently adopted international statistical standard, the 2025 System of National Accounts (SNA). This presentation aims to highlight some of the most challenging issues related to natural resources accounting when following the recommendations by the new 2025 SNA. Drawing upon a series of research papers in this field, the presentation will share the Norwegian experiences in dealing with the relevant issues, with the hope that knowledges gained and lessons learned from the early experimental exercises in Norway can well be exploited to facilitate the implementation of the new 2025 SNA as international standard for countries worldwide, and to help the preparation of the subsequently revised European System of Accounts (ESA) as regional standard for EU member states and other European countries.
