Abstract
This presentation discusses the needs, mandate, and manifestations of localising data and indicators of sustainable development (SD). At an SDG level, the 2030 agenda relies on global goals being taken up at all governance levels: the OECD’s A territorial approach to the SDGs notes that the achievement of 105 out of 165 SDG targets will depend on “proper engagement” from sub-national governments. At a subnational level, regional and city governments can use the SDGs to provide vertical cohesion, and to evaluate or tailor existing and new programmes. Beyond the SDGs, local engagement in SD indicators can shift the very concept of SD where needed and constitute an integral part of regional development strategies. The presentation will discuss these elements and their contributions to harnessing bottom-up data approaches for official statistics.
