Abstract
The ability to reach reliable and relevant data is very important, but what makes this data actually matters is the way it is being disseminated. Statistical literacy is served to be a highly professional approach to convey the statistical message between National Statistical Offices (NSOs) and data users. The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) is very keen to keep pace with the latest achievements and developments regarding the field of data dissemination through adopting a wide range of user engagement tools in accordance with the best practices at both the regional and international levels. In this sense, it pushes towards empowering the use of statistical literacy in order to enhancing public understanding of statistical concepts, promote proper use of official data, and building trust in statistical systems.
One such initiative is the implementing of the national school statistics competition “My Future in Numbers” through its five cycles. The competition aims to strengthen 9th and 10th -grade school students’ ability to understand, interpret, and apply official statistics through an engaging, user-friendly platform. It was conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Education and supported by UNICEF and Save the Children. It reached government, UNRWA, and private schools across Palestine.
This contribution highlights the evolution of the competition over its five cycles. Participation has increased in terms of the number of students and schools, along with a progressive enhancement on the digital tools and platforms. Particular attention has been given to improving accessibility for students with disabilities, especially in the latest cycle. Each cycle of the competition has presented unique challenges, from logistical constraints to platform accessibility, and PCBS has adapted by incorporating lessons learned to refine methodologies, improve engagement, and ensure inclusive participation.
On the other hand, the use of interactive tools and platforms play a crucial role in facilitating the access to official statistics. PCBS developed a specialized platform designed for young people and students with easy access allowing them to navigate through and explore a wide range of produced statistical indicators. It applies many data visualization tools such as charts, graphs, maps infographics, along with videos, games and some useful links. These tools and platforms play a key role in initiatives aimed at introducing statistical figures to students and raising their awareness of the role of official statistics in decision-making.
This fruitful experience has expanded access and engagement through providing a positive learning experience for students, reflecting PCBS’s commitment to innovation, transparency, and the ethical use of data. It has offered important lessons on inclusivity, accessibility, and shed more light on the great role that the students can play in shaping a data-literate society. Building on the Palestine Data Strategy, which aims to guide the transformation of the national statistical system toward an integrated data strategy, PCBS continues to work on multiple proposals aiming at enhancing future statistical activities, further strengthening its role in promoting statistical literacy and pushing toward a generation with greater data awareness.
