Abstract

Croatian Bureau of Statistics uses GIS software in its work with spatial data from 2005 with the first version being ESRI solution ArcMap 9.2.
Now CBS uses version Arc GIS Pro. The software is used for creating spatial databases, performing spatial analysis (e.g. when processing and correcting 2021 Census data), creating and updating spatial classifications (Degree of Urbanisation, Functional Urban Areas ), creating spatial queries, creating cartographic visualization, etc.

CBS has worked on several Eurostat grants which required use of this software.
First grant was Merging of statistical data of the census of population, households and dwellings 2011 and geospatial information in the Republic of Croatia. In this grant CBS has for the first time disseminated 2011 census data on 1 square kilometre grid and has produced following datasets: total population, population by sex, population by age, broken down into groups 0-14, 15-64, 65 and over, population by sex and age broken down in three age groups (women/men aged 0-14, 15-64, 65 and over), population by activity (active and inactive), population aged 15 and over by educational attainment.

Second grant was about merging data of the register of business entities with geospatial information in the Republic of Croatia. Croatian Bureau of Statistics prepared merging of data from two registers, the Register of Business Entities with the Spatial Statistical Register, modelled after experiences in the Scandinavian countries who have a substantially developed network of various registers.
By merging administrative with spatial data from these two registers, users can track a number of registered business entities according to the National Classification of Activities 2007 – NKD 2007 at section level as well as according to their legal organizational forms on the grid sized 1 square kilometre. In addition, they can monitor a number of active business entities at lower classification levels within a certain NKD 2007 section.

Third grant was about merging data on accommodation establishments and tourist activity with geospatial information in the Republic of Croatia.
In this Eurostat's grant, the Croatian Bureau of Statistics has so far successfully merged data from the 2011 Census and data from the Register of Business Entities with spatial data. Within the project, in order to increase the awareness of the importance of using geospatial information and tourism data as one of the most important economic activities in the Republic of Croatia, CBS merged data on accommodation capacities and tourist activity (the database created by combining data from eVisitor and TU-11 forms) with the Spatial Statistical Register data.
By merging administrative with spatial data, users can track, on the 1 square kilometre statistical grid, a number of domestic and foreign tourist arrivals and nights, information on accommodation capacities (number of rooms, permanent beds, accommodation establishments and households providing accommodation services to tourists).
