Abstract

Malaysia’s economic statistics rely on accurate classification of business activities, products, and household consumption to support evidence-based policy and research. To facilitate this, Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) developed BizCode, a digital platform providing interactive access to national classification codes. The platform integrates Malaysia Standard Industrial Classification (MSIC) for economic activities, Malaysia Classification of Products by Activity (MCPA) for products, and Malaysia’s Classification of Individual Consumption According for Purpose (MCOICOP) for household consumption. These classifications are harmonized to support consistent and accurate statistical reporting.

Moving beyond traditional statistics manuals, BizCode leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to provide an interactive and intelligent interface. The platform's core innovation lies in its ability to interpret unstructured business descriptions and link them seamlessly across different classification domains. This integration ensures that product (MCPA) and consumption (MCOICOP) data are directly aligned with their respective economic activity codes (MSIC), significantly reducing data fragmentation and enhancing the consistency of national statistical reporting.

Implemented under the Statistical Big Data Analytics (STATSBDA) initiative, BizCode is accessible through both web-based and mobile platforms and incorporates an AI-powered chatbot to assist non-technical users. By streamlining the classification process for government agencies, researchers, and the private sector, the platform not only improves operational efficiency but also strengthens the national statistical infrastructure. This paper demonstrates how Malaysia can harness digital innovation and AI to foster data interoperability and accessibility, ultimately supporting more agile and informed economic and social analysis in a data-driven era.
