Abstract

The usage of different Lithuanian registers for production of official statistics started more than 20 years ago. Accumulated experience on analyzing different administrative sources made possible to move from traditional census approach in 2001 towards combined census approach in 2011 and finally towards fully register-based census approach in 2021.
Successful usage of registers encouraged Statistics Lithuania to go even further. The creation of statistical population register began in 2021 in response to the user’s requests to have data more frequently, more timely and in more detailed breakdowns as well as need to harmonize and standardize demographic and social statistics.
The completely register-based approach, however, does come with its own challenges and difficulties.
