Abstract

In this talk, I will share my approach to inclusive practice in the day-to-day teaching of statistics, with a focus on fostering students’ sense of belonging. Drawing on my experience serving on mitigating circumstances panels, I will reflect on the challenges students face and how institutional practices can better support diverse needs.

I will also discuss my outreach work aimed at encouraging greater participation in mathematics and statistics, particularly among young girls, and highlight how such initiatives can contribute to widening access and aspiration. In addition, I will present my experience organising hackathons that actively promote inclusion and engagement among students from diverse backgrounds.

Finally, I will reflect on my role as EDI co-director within the Researchers of Statistics Education Network (RoSE) network, considering how collaborative efforts can shape more inclusive educational environments. Through these examples, the talk will offer practical insights into embedding inclusive practices in statistics education and enhancing students’ sense of belonging.
