Practical pathways for strengthening biostatistical capacity in African health research
Abstract
Strengthening biostatistical capacity in African health research involves combining statistical education, methodological expertise, and institutional collaboration with practical support for scientific research. A central element is the integration of statistical expertise throughout the research process, from study planning to the interpretation and reporting of findings. The establishment of the Founding Charter of the African Network for Statistical Excellence in Health Research (ANSEHR), encompassing 30 African countries, provides an organisational foundation for developing such activities. The Network aims to facilitate access to biostatistical expertise, strengthen research competencies, and support the collaborative development of solutions by African experts. Practical approaches consistent with the objectives of ANSEHR include statistical and methodological training, workshops, webinars, mentorship, and accessible educational resources. Statistical consultations may support study design, selection of appropriate analytical methods, and assessment of statistical results. Cross-institutional collaboration among African research institutions could create opportunities for methodological review of research protocols, statistical analyses, and scientific manuscripts, alongside the development of statistical peer-review competencies. Collaborative research projects, scientific meetings, and publications might further encourage knowledge exchange and cooperation across countries. Together, these approaches have the potential to strengthen biostatistical expertise, support sustainable institutional development, and contribute to methodological quality and reproducibility in African health research.
