Abstract

This presentation highlights the impact and evolution of the University of the Western Cape’s Data Science programmes since 2018, focusing on its collaborative Master’s programme with the Centre for Business, Mathematics and Informatics at North-West University. As one of the few successful joint Master's initiatives in Data Science in South Africa, this intensive 12-month programme bridges the gap between academia and industry incorporating industry projects as part of the research component of the curricula. Over nearly a decade, this strategic partnership has enabled lecturers to co-design and continuously renew curricula, upskill themselves and students in emerging technologies, and translate complex business problems into viable academic research. Ongoing collaboration with local and global industry partners ensure the curriculum stays aligned with evolving market demands. Maintaining dual-lecturer capability (one at each university) for each module mitigates continuity risks, facilitating seamless knowledge transfer during staff turnover or redeployment.
Beyond academic coursework, the programme develops essential soft skills, including active listening, problem-solving, project planning and effective communication. The joint programme enables students to benefit from cross-university collaboration and hands-on experience with real-world data in an industry setting. Students frequently secure employment with partner companies immediately after graduation.
However, executing a cross-institutional, industry-aligned curriculum introduces distinct operational challenges. This presentation will share critical reflections on managing differing academic calendars, student relocation to industry partners, securing funding and technology access, and navigating restrictive non-disclosure agreements that limit research publications. Ultimately, these insights offer a scalable model for using strategic partnerships to drive workforce readiness and sustainable development across the continent.
