Data science and artificial intelligence (AI)
Abstract
Data science and artificial intelligence (AI) are creating new opportunities to transform official statistics by improving the timeliness, granularity, efficiency, and relevance of statistical outputs. From integrating alternative data sources and automating statistical processes to developing innovative analytical methods, these technologies can strengthen the capacity of national statistical systems to respond to evolving information needs. However, their adoption also raises important challenges concerning data governance, privacy, confidentiality, methodological transparency, bias, accountability, and public trust.
This presnetation examines how national statistical offices and other producers of official statistics can navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of data science and AI while upholding the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics. It explores the concept of statistical stewardship as a framework for ensuring that data and emerging technologies are managed responsibly throughout the statistical value chain, from data acquisition and processing to analysis, dissemination, and use. Particular attention is given to the governance arrangements, institutional capacities, ethical safeguards, and professional standards needed to ensure that AI-enabled statistical production remains reliable, impartial, transparent, and fit for public purpose
