Abstract
There is a lot of demand for high-quality data on intangible assets to inform policymaking and effective business strategies. However, whereas information is available from the national accounts and from the Global INTAN-Invest database, there is still a lot of room for improvement. In that regard, the coverage could be expanded in terms of assets and in terms of countries, and the quality of the existing estimates may be further improved. For this purpose, it is important to look at opportunities to improve the measurement guidance for specific types of intangibles - particularly for those produced on own account - which may help to arrive at more robust and comparable estimates of output, investments and stock estimates. Furthermore, it could be assessed whether more countries may start compiling the relevant estimates, also based on clear compilation guidance. This presentation will lay out a roadmap to address these issues, proposing a specific measurement agenda for intangibles relying on the joint expertise of both the international statistical community and the academic world.
