Abstract
Whilst AI was founded as a formal field in 1956 and has been used in Statistical Offices for many years, it was the introduction of ChatGPT in 2022 which has really accelerated interest in the adoption of AI in the production of Statistics. AI has the potential to have a significant impact on the National Statistical Office of the Future and it is vital that we maintain methodological robustness as a foundation of its responsible and ethical use. Drawing on the UN’s paper The Future of NSOs - A Call to Action, this presentation will look to see how collaborative efforts in projects such as Eurostat’s AI/ML for Official Statistics and UNECE projects such as UN’s Framework on Responsible Use of AI and AI Readiness are providing practical guidance on how to ensure we have the institutional frameworks and conditions to ensure AI enhances the methodological foundations on which Official Statistics depend.
