Data Science, Artificial Intelligence for Official Statistics: Toward a New Culture
Conference
Proposal Description
The effects of technologies have provided new avenues of data for national statistical organizations (NSOs) across the world, which can then be harnessed through the power of data science. However, as data continue to grow in size and complexity; national statistical offices (NSOs) should benefit from these opportunities to improve data for decision-making. In the avalanche of new data eco-system, NSOs may need a data steward, and the NSOs could take on that role, while paying close attention to the fundamental principle of official statistics. The limitation of conventional statistics in managing and analyzing big data has inspired data analysts to venture into data science. Data Science is a combination of multiple disciplines that use statistics, data analysis, and machine learning to analyze data, and extract knowledge and insights from it. It can also be described as extracting meaningful patterns from data using machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), and visualization methods. These swathes of new digital data are valuable for official statistics. This invited paper session aims to examine the emergency of data science and the new data eco-system; what could be the expanding role for official statistics in the era of data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence; present ways NSOs can integrate Data Science, Machine learning and Artificial Intelligence methodologies into official statistics without compromising the Fundamental Principle of Official Statistics. therefore providing direction on how Data Science center could be created within various national statistical offices for effective service delivery
