New paradigms and challenges of sampling statistics in the digital era
Conference
Proposal Description
Co-organizer Cristiano Ferraz
The digital era is characterised by the systematic development of new and repurposed technologies, coupled with an unprecedented capacity to store massive amounts of data. This shift has consolidated new behavioural patterns, generating information with high potential to be utilised either as population benchmarks or as auxiliary data for improving statistical sampling estimates and selection procedures. While sampling statisticians have a long and successful tradition of leveraging all available data for superior design and estimation, the quest for innovative methods to integrate Big Data sources with established survey sampling remains a critical area for discussion. This Invited Paper Session creates a vital opportunity to broadly share ideas on this subject, prompting a necessary re-reading of core sampling principles in light of the digital era. The three invited speakers will bring a variety of distinct perspectives and approaches. The discussion will be opened by an official discussant. The themes of the session are related with IASS and a IASS vice-president will serve as the session chair.
