Abstract

This Special invited paper session is proposed by the ISI Special Interest Group on Data Science and is organized as a panel discussion. The President of the ISI and the presidents of several ISI associations will discuss the impact of the fast evolution and expansion of artificial intelligence and data science on the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and ISI associations. At the same time, the role of the ISI in this framework will be figured out.
The future for traditional stochastic modelling, the role of artificial intelligence and data science for official statistics, survey sampling, education, business and industrial statistics, statistical computing etc. will be addressed. Moreover, the role of ISI associations in the application and development of data science and artificial intelligence will be taken into consideration.
Some questions: Will statistical models become obsolete due to the increasing use of AI? What impact will generative AI have in statistics and data science? Which role can be played by data science and AI in official statistics? Which is the role of probability sample surveys in the use of data science and AI? How can data science and AI contribute to improving estimates based on probability sample surveys? What is the impact of AI on teaching, learning and practicing statistics and on scientific publications? Which will be the role of ISI and its associations?
