Proposal Description
Official statistics are the basis for governing from knowledge and improving the human condition. It is not an overstatement to say they are a foundation on which our societies thrive. As new data types and sources emerge in the age of AI, how can official statistics capitalize on these opportunities, and which statistical methodologies matter most? With AI placing information, both correct and incorrect, at the fingertips of anyone with a smartphone, the role of official statistics becomes more important than ever in ensuring that citizens and communities rely on accurate information for their local decisions. We have convened a distinguished panel of practitioners and scholars to discuss how official statistics are evolving in this era, and to consider the needs of governments, communities, citizens, and researchers in a rapidly changing landscape.
