    Proposal Description

The panel will examine how AMARISTAT can contribute to strengthening official statistics, complement existing regional institutions, and support implementation of the African Statistics Strategy, and fulfilling the data requirements of Agenda 2063 as well as support measurement of implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. It will also explore opportunities for collaboration among national, regional, and international statistical organizations.
    Key Questions
    1. What statistical capacity gaps motivated the creation of AMARISTAT?
    2. How can AMARISTAT complement the long-standing regional experience of other existing African statistical institutions?
    3. What support mechanisms are most effective for strengthening NSOs in West Africa?
    4. How can regional cooperation improve harmonization, comparability, and quality of official statistics?
    5. What role should international partners play in supporting sustainable statistical capacity development?
    6. How can AMARISTAT contribute to modernization, including utilization of administrative data, geospatial information, big data and data modeling ?
    Expected Outcomes
    • Identification of priority areas for statistical capacity strengthening in Western Africa.
    • Framework for cooperation between AMARISTAT, NSOs, other regional organizations, and development partners.
    • Recommendations for sustainable financing and governance of regional statistical support institutions.
    • Contribution to discussions on the future architecture of statistical capacity development in Africa.
This topic fits well within the ISI Congress themes of strengthening official statistics, statistical capacity development, innovation in statistical systems, and regional cooperation.
