    Proposal Description

Since the Covid crisis at latest, mobile phone data are used to understand mobility patterns. However, different market shares amongst the mobile companies and the fact that owner of SIM cards may not be the user, cause unexpected sources of biases in statistics directly derived from mobile phone data. Nevertheless, mobile data allow timely analyses of statistics like transportation that hardly can ever be achieved with survey data. Additionally, the geographical granularity of statistics derived from mobile data may allow new and deep analyses like shares of public transportation media on smallest scales.

The aim of the session is to discuss advantages and pitfalls from using mobile data for modern official statistics production. Special emphasis will be laid on different examples of official statistics using mobile data as well as on new data integration techniques that enable highly detailed analyses. The presentation cover examples using different data sources. Additionally, the use of mobile data for understanding mobility patterns in transportation will be discussed.
