‘The Future of Official Statistics: Strategic Leadership and Organisational Transformation in the Age of AI’
Conference
Proposal Description
Background
Official statistics are entering a new phase of transformation as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly relevant across the full statistical value chain, from data collection and processing to analysis, dissemination and user interaction. At the same time, statistical organisations are operating in a demanding environment shaped by rapidly evolving technologies, growing demands for data, changing user expectations and an increasing need to preserve trust and professional independence.
AI and other digital innovations are creating significant opportunities for official statistics. They can support more efficient production processes, improve accessibility through AI-powered searches and conversational interfaces, enable more open and responsive dissemination and communication of statistical information, and help users navigate data more easily through attractive visualisations and personalised content. These developments may lead to the strengthening of the relevance and visibility of official statistics worldwide.
However, the growing use of AI also raises strategic questions for the leadership of statistical organisations. The issue is no longer only how to adopt these powerful new tools, but how to guide transformation responsibly. Statistical authorities must ensure that innovation supports the integrity, reliability, impartiality and trustworthiness that underpin official statistics, while also addressing questions related to data ethics. As AI technologies are being more widely employed in the production of official statistics, international and national statistical organisations must be open about these new production methods and underlying processes. They must focus on promoting transparency and emphasising the role of official statistics as a trusted public good.
In this context, a high-level discussion would be beneficial on how leaders of statistical organisations can lead the transformation and shape the future of official statistics in the age of AI. This strategic debate would offer an opportunity to reflect not only on the growing technological potential, but also on governance, strategic direction, institutional readiness and international statistical cooperation.
