Theme and Strands

IAOS 2026 Vilnius Theme

We are living through a data revolution. Never before has information been generated at such scale and speed, transforming the way we understand our world and make decisions. This unprecedented flow of data presents both opportunities and challenges — demanding new methods, fresh thinking and bold innovation.

The theme "Navigating the Data Revolution: Innovations and Impact in Modern Statistics" highlights the essential role of modern statistics in this landscape. It calls attention to how statisticians, data scientists, and policymakers can harness data to produce meaningful insights, drive innovation and address complex societal challenges.

By focusing on both innovation — the tools, methods and ideas that push the boundaries of what’s possible — and impact — the ways in which statistics shape research, industry, governance and daily life — the conference provides a platform to explore why staying at the forefront of statistical development is more important than ever.

Strands

1. New sources and tools for effectiveness: AI and Machine Learning in Statistics

This strand explores how emerging technologies like AI and Machine Learning are transforming statistical practices and enhancing effectiveness. It focuses on innovations in handling privately held data, modernizing survey methodologies, and improving data integration and quality.

2. Balancing the Scales: Ethics, Privacy, and the Future of Statistics

As data becomes more powerful and pervasive, statisticians face growing tensions between ethical responsibility and analytical potential. This strand explores how the principles of privacy, transparency, and trust can be upheld in an evolving data landscape.

3. Delivering Value: Statistics for an Informed and Digital Society

This strand highlights the critical role of statistics in empowering an informed digital society. It covers advancements in public communication, geospatial statistics and mapping as powerful tools for visualization of statistics, and innovative approaches to data reuse for policy and decision-making. Emphasizing the importance of statistical literacy for the digital generation, it also addresses the evolving profiles and needs of statistics users in today’s data-driven world.

4. Shaping the Future of Statistics: Technology, Talent, and AI Innovation

This strand explores how technology is transforming statistical processes and the roles of organisation staff. It focuses on the evolving skill sets required, the future of statistical education, and how AI can revolutionize statistical workflows.

5. Data Interoperability: Developing New Ecosystems

This strand focuses on advancing data interoperability by building new ecosystems that enable seamless data sharing and integration. It highlights the critical roles of ontologies, metadata, and data governance in creating connected and trustworthy data environments.

6. Building Symbiotic Partnerships: What Can We Achieve Working Together?

This strand highlights the benefits of building strong, collaborative partnerships to achieve shared goals. It covers topics such as measuring, modeling, and understanding response burden, as well as fostering effective partnerships with stakeholders, international organisations, and society.
